Eixample

One of the most sought-after areas of the city

The most fashionable district in Valencia right now. The Ruzafa quarter is particularly popular, which has now received great development. Almost all commercial premises on the lower floors of the building are occupied here, many buildings have been restored, and the streets are crowded. The area is located very close to the center, within walking distance.

The Gran Via quarter is a beautiful building, with traditional wrought–iron balconies. It’s a respectable neighborhood, with straight pancake streets. The main streets Gran Via and Reino de Valencia are avenues with a park area in the middle. The houses here are tall, but they are not so close to each other, so there is a lot of sun on the streets. Ruzafa is a more democratic neighborhood, and the streets here are a bit messy.

Advantages: location; communications; availability of shops, bars, restaurants, good schools; beautiful buildings; absence of immigrants from disadvantaged countries; very positive atmosphere.

Cons: the sea can only be reached by metro or by car; the high cost of real estate; it is quite a busy tourist area, but certainly not like the old center.

Until 1877, Ruzafa was part of the municipality of Ruzafa, but now it is one of the quarters of the Eixample in the city of Valencia. The name of the quarter comes from the Arabic word “Rusafa”, which means “garden”. His name is also associated with the Arab poet Al-Roussafi, who wrote beautiful poems about the local king.

The Ruzafa quarter originated as an estate and garden founded by the Arabs in the 9th century. After their departure, the townspeople used the garden as a place to relax. Ruzafa has a strategic location as a military site, it was here that King Jaime I deployed his troops to capture Valencia. Agriculture was the basis of the district’s economy until the 19th century. Now Ruzafa is a full-fledged city block with many attractions, including the Ruzafa Cathedral. There is also a Monastery of Our Lady of Angels and a famous Market in the area.

The Gran Vía quarter is a residential area with a population of about 12,000 people, but it also has transportation, cafes and restaurants. Valencia preserves its historical heritage, regardless of the political views of the former rulers, such as the monument to General Franco, erected in the 40s.
