Barcelona

One of the most important tourist destinations on European routes.

The city is located on the Mediterranean coast, about 120 km south of the Pyrenees mountain range and the border with France, on a small coastal plain bounded on the east by the sea, the Sierra de Colcerola on the west and the Llobregat River on the south and the Besos River on the north. Since it was the capital of the county of Barcelona, it is usually called the “county town”.

 

The history of Barcelona dates back more than 4,000 years, from the end of the Neolithic era, when the first remains were found on the territory of the city, to the present day. The substratum of its inhabitants unites Iberian, Roman, Jewish, Visigothic, Muslim and Christian peoples. As the capital of Catalonia and the second most important city in Spain, it has gained relevance over time, turning from a small Roman colony into a city appreciated internationally for aspects such as economy, artistic heritage, culture, sports and social life.

The city has a long and rich architectural history, starting with the ancient ruins of the Roman settlement that founded Barcelona, from which only archaeological finds or scattered fragments remain, such as the columns of the Temple of Augustus inside the building of the Catalonia Sightseeing Center. The remains of Barsino underground (integrated into the Barcelona History Museum) or old walls. There is also evidence of much later Romanesque buildings, such as the monastery of San Pablo del Campo or the chapel of Marcus.

 

Barcelona is known as the capital of modernism due to the huge quantity and quality of the works of art located in it, with such jewels as the Hospital of Santa Cruz and San Pablo, the Palace of Catalan Music by Luis Domenech y Montaner or the Macaya House by Josep Puig and Cadafalk; but, without a doubt, the most famous and recognized architect-The modernist is Antonio Gaudi.

 

There are many parks in Barcelona. The most famous are the Park of Guell, designed by Antonio Gaudi in the Gracia district, the Montjuic Park, located on the mountain of the same name, and the park of Ciudadela, located in the city center, where you can visit the Parliament of Catalonia and the Barcelona Zoo, famous for containing the albino gorilla Snowflake before his death.
