The streets of Madrid are a real open—air sculpture museum. Since the 18th century, the space of the Prado Hall has been decorated with an iconographic program of monumental fountains with classical references: the Artichoke Fountain, Four Fountains, the Fountain of Neptune, the Fountain of Apollo and the Fountain of Cybele, all designed by Ventura Rodriguez. In the three doors of the Prado Museum there are statues dedicated to Murillo (Sabino Medina), Velazquez (Aniceto Marinas) and Goya (Mariano Benli); and then, in the Plaza de la Lealtad, there is an obelisk to those who fell in love with Spain, with a constantly burning flame. After the Prado Hall on Paseo de la Castellana, on the steps of the National Library there is a series of statues of Spanish writers (and inside there is a remarkable statue of Marcelino Menendez Pelayo.

Although it is the central district that concentrates most of the tourist interest, some attractions can also be found in peripheral neighborhoods.
